A distracted driver is an unsafe one. That's something everyone at DCH Toyota of Torrance knows. And while national campaigns have kicked off in an effort to put an end to distracted driving, the answer isn't always as simple as putting the phone down. Distractions come in a wide range of forms, and now one knows this better than Toyoat.
The Japanese automaker has done quite a bit over the years to improve the safety of the vehicles they sell. And now they're ready to take their safety game to the next level. Specifically, Toyota is developing a new system that can actively monitor what kind of mood a driver is in, and then predict how likely they are to become distracted.
How is this possible? The new system uses a camera facing the driver to examine 238 facial points. From there, it can calculate how close each one is to another to determine their mood. From there, it can prepare for how easily distracted they may become by pre-activating avoidance systems and alerting them if a potential hazard is in the way.
What's more, the system can also tell if a driver is immediately distracted. For instance, if they begin using their phone behind the wheel or are taking too long adjusting the radio, the system can give the driver a reminder to keep their eyes on the road.
As for when we can expect to see this technology in use? It could be some time. Toyota is actively developing the new technology, but they have yet to even show off a proof of concept. Nevertheless, DCH Toyota of Torrance, conveniently located at 2909 Pacific Coast Highway suggests checking back for more information in the near future.
